What is SEO and why is it important for your online website or business?

SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization which is a digital marketing strategy that mainly focuses on your website of online business' presence in search results on search engines like Google, Bing or Firefox. Search Engines are pretty much like online answering machines, when you inquire about a certain topic search engines are able to render millions of results in seconds based on relevance, importance and or popularity. Search engines achieve all of this in such a short time by collecting, categorizing and storing all the available content on the internet related to your individual search (ie: photos, gifs, videos, PDF, Forums, etc.) via a process known as the "crawling and indexing". Search engines then take all of this information and order it by relevance, importance or popularity in a process known as "ranking".


What are the three key fundamental factors of SEO?


  1. Relevance

There are 5 main factors that contribute to the relevance of a query.

  • Title Page

  • Analysis of content

  • Anchor text in links

  • Topic matter on site or links

  • Search Engine results pages or SERPs


The importance of relevance in any results page is simply the fact that you cannot rank on given search items/terms if you lack content that is relevant to the search.



2. Importance


Search engines try to determine how important each SERP is to a relevant search, this is also how they determine which results appear first and so on. The main factor involved is in inbound links.


What are inbound links?

Inbound links are links that are from other websites or a different domain/ URL name.

Basic PR and content marketing techniques are valuable in spreading information about your product/ service and can lead to potential customers engaging with or sharing your content creating more organic traffic.



3. Popularity


Certain queries don't find importance as important to determine as popularity. Popularity is an major key factor for trending topics (ie: breaking news or top movies or trending music). This category is also a source where social media signals can be triggered for use. As with relevance user SERP behavior could be a great indicator as well.


Creating popular content isn't the easiest, to succeed you will need to have an amazing creative mindset and a will to win, that not being the only factor. You will also need to test content repeatedly to find a winning strategy.
